Savaneta
Savaneta is the old fishing village on the south coast, with Pos Chiquito next to it. The sea here is calm and shallow — Mangel Halto is the snorkelling beach — and houses on the water are a fraction of the price they would be in Noord.
What to know
Living in Savaneta
Savaneta was Aruba's first capital and is still a fishing village at heart: small harbours, pier restaurants, and houses that run down to the water along the south coast. Pos Chiquito and Spanish Lagoon are part of the same stretch.
The south coast is sheltered, so the water is flat and clear — Mangel Halto is the best snorkelling on the island. Waterfront and near-water houses here cost far less than on the north-west coast, which is why buyers who want the sea rather than the hotel strip end up in Savaneta. Oranjestad is twelve minutes away, the airport ten.
