Oranjestad
Oranjestad is the capital: the harbour, the cruise terminal, government offices, the main hospital and the pastel Dutch-colonial streets. Around it are the older neighbourhoods — Ponton, Sero Blanco, Socotoro — where houses are more affordable and neighbours are Aruban.
What to know
Living in Oranjestad
Oranjestad is where the island does its business. The harbour and the cruise pier are on the sea side, the main street of shops behind them, and the government, the banks, the notaries and the Horacio Oduber hospital a few minutes further in.
Most people live in the neighbourhoods around the centre rather than in it: Ponton, Sero Blanco, Socotoro, Bushiri, Tarabana. Streets are quieter, plots are normal-sized, and a long-term rental costs noticeably less than the same house in Noord. The free trolley runs through the centre; everywhere else you drive.
Renters relocating for work — the hospital, the university, the refinery contractors — often settle here for the commute.
